DAY 6

We are approaching the end of my garbage free week! It is Saturday though and my mom is coming over for some shopping and dinner.

My day starts off with some homework while my daughter is bouncing around the living room watching her cartoons. Her breakfast consists of raspberries, grapes and a piece of toast. So far so good. After a long walk around the neighborhood and a short stint at the park, we return home for lunch. On the menu: leftover pizza. She loves it! I do too. I asked for pizza because it comes in a cardboard box and it helps minimize plastic packaging. My husband, bless his heart, knows I have a weakness for the garlic sauce dip. Which is wonderful until I'm faced with garbage. I rinse the plastic container and recycle it. As for the tin foil lid, straight to the jar it goes. Nice and compact.

My daughter goes down for her nap and I wait for my mom to come over. The horror... She arrives with Starbucks, a complete lunch, snacks: The mother load of packaging. I try explaining to her this challenge I'm in and she sort of giggles a bit. No biggie... I go through the garbage and most of it is recyclable and reusable.

As soon as my daughter wakes up from her nap, we leave to go to the mall, reusable bags in toe. I don't envision buying much, but better be safe than sorry. My daughter left home without a snack, so we decide that we would get a smoothie at Booster Juice. They recently changed their styrofoam cups to plastic. It's not that much better, but it is an improvement. We recycled the cups, but we had to litter the straws. I didn't know how to tell my mom I had to take home the straws. So instead of having to explain sticky straws in my purse, I just threw them in the garbage. I know these are not the rules of the game and I should have brought my daughter her own snacks, but again... In the name of convenience, here we are again. At least I'm aware...

As for dinner, we decided to make tacos. I had some defrosted ground beef at home that I bought at the Aurora market last summer that they wrapped in craft paper. That wasn't entirely planned, but definitely worked in my favour. The taco kit, however, was a different story. Everything was wrapped in some plastic... Very disappointing way to end my week. I thought I had this! The meal was delicious and for the most part we were fairly free from litter.

This challenge has been so eye opening for me because now I realize how overly packaged everything is. But I also realize that I have been doing well in that department without giving it too much thought. I use rags, not paper towels. I have a reusable coffee filter. I reuse plastic bags as garbage liners. I use glass containers. And so much more. From groceries to toys I will now buy, I believe I can take this lifestyle to its next level.
