DAY 7

Day 7

Here we are on day 7 of my garbage free week! What an enlightening experience this was.

Day 7 was probably my worse garbage disposal day. Here are the items:
Avocado net bag
Milk bag
Individual yogurt lid

With the amount of avocado and milk that are being consumed in this household, the choice of going for that type of packaging is based on economical reasons. In my efforts to find ways to reuse the milk bags on Pinterest, there were loads of ideas for milk jugs, but not much for milk bags... Unless I planned to knit a carpet out of plastic or cut the bags in half to make treat bags.

But with that being said, on my garbage free adventure, I have stumbled on some very interesting material and strategies to reduce, recycle and reuse some of these plastic items that are hard to avoid! I have pinned many along the way and look forward to using them in my classroom. Some of them are great discussion starters and some are clever craft ideas. There is tons of resources out there appropriate for all grades.

I tend to repeat myself quite a bit on this blog, because let's face it, it is not until you are put in this situation where you realize the copious amount of plastic that surrounds us. I challenge you to walk in your supermarket aisles and find an item that is not wrapped in plastic! Even the ice cream paper tubs have a plastic film. The individually packaged oatmeal was the only convenient ly packaged product that was fully recyclable.

At the end of the day, we live in a world where we expect everything to be done for us. We live in a fast paced world where in order to arrive to the finish line on time and be able to do everything we want to do, we demand convenience. The only way we could revert this trend and go back to basics, we would need to go back to simpler times... And frankly, stop being so lazy.

It's in all of us, we just need to be aware of the problem to start improving the way we do things, starting with the way we shop. A little bit goes a long way and I believe I left my mark this week and for the future as well.

Here are front and back pictures of my Mason Jar that was used as my garbage for the week. If I may say, I pretty much killed it and you can too!
