DAY 1

DAY 1

It's 6:30am. I'm making my lunch while keeping in mind that i must steer away from any food items that would end up as garbage. I pull out my lunch containers and rummage through my fridge. Salad it will be! I take my bagged salad out and toss the lettuce in my container. It's starting already. I'm stuck with a plastic bag. It's garbage. What do I do? Well, in my attempt to making this salad, I had cut an avocado, so guess what I did with the other half? I reused the salad bag, wrapped an elastic around it and put it back in the fridge. That will make a great snacks for my daughter later on. I realized that normally, the bag would have gone straight into the garbage and my handy dandy plastic wrap would have gone around my avocado instead. Win!

At snack time, I pulled out my energy bites I made the day prior to replace my packaged granola bars. They were super easy to make and delicious too! There really isn't a good reason why I shouldn't just make those every week. I avoided buying any sort of snack, like a coffee or a muffin. Not knowing where the recycling would actually end up, I did not want to risk it. Should I trust the blue bin at school? I guess I could bring my own coffee thermos too, but let's be honest, a coffee a day is sufficient. Could it be that while I'm reducing my garbage. I'm also saving money? Double win!

I had successfully completed my first garbage free day, until I came home and was faced with my Old Navy order, that came, nonetheless, in a plastic bag. The humongous box that Amazon usually sends the tiniest book in did not seem so ridiculous anymore. At least it's recyclable! It got me thinking that no matter how hard you try to be green, the world is just not set up that way. Buying these items at the store in person and using a reusable shopping bag would have solved that issue. Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for a pair of jeans and a shirt to arrive. I just hope it comes next week!
